Happy Birthday to Plated History!
Today marks the anniversary of the very first Substack post of this project which holds a special place in my heart. This project was largely inspired by a long night in Amsterdam at Bar Bario with a close friend and a group of strangers, but also the endless meals I had in Lowry, Kittredge, and other dining spots at my alma mater (shout out to my Woo friends 💛 🖤 ). I started the project when I was still unsure who my community was in Lisbon, a city I had moved to only 5 months prior. I was craving conversations with people who were willing to sit down with my incredibly curious (and socially anxious) self.
A year later, my community is still evolving, my Portuguese language skills are 10x better, and I feel like I have found some amazing folks in Lisbon to call my friends, but the world has still found countless ways to break my heart. From Congo, Palestine, Haiti, Sudan, Lebanon, and more recently Syria, and the upcoming and current administration of my home country have filled me with much anger and grief. And while I will save you all from reading my cheesy speech (I’m trying to resist the urge to return to my SGA presidential diction) about how we need each other now more than ever, Plated History has allowed me to meet and befriend some genuinely amazing people who continuously restore my faith in this world + humanity. This project has also aided my need to go down rabbit holes on different topics to allow the little bright-eyed sociology major to continue to feed the curiosity that makes me who I am today.
This is all to say, I am really glad I took the plunge and countless typos to start this. While it hasn’t been smooth sailing, I am still happy that you reading this have taken enough interest in my scrambled brain to follow along Plated History’s evolving journey this past year. Thank you for tuning into the episodes, for subscribing/following, and in general for engaging with the content I put out onto the internet. I’m just a kid from Ohio who never outgrew asking questions, but this kid is so grateful for your support.
Here’s to another year of Plated History along with the hiccups that come along with life and the production of this podcast 🙂 If you’re in Lisbon and want to celebrate Plated History’s 1 year birthday with me, stay tuned (and/or send me a message) for a very special opportunity to do so!
With endless gratitude,
Monét
